paint it white and look for Spring

Good morning Cottage Fix friends! I’m blogging in today under beautiful blue skies and the promise of mild sunny days for the remainder of this week. Yes, Spring is in the air and it’s time to get things going—or bust.

I had a bit of a cheat in the hallway here with this light and airy white paint. I hired my dear professional painting friend to paint it for me, you know with the super high ceilings in the stairwell and all. It was looking quite ominous to me, and really like something I’d never get around to tackling myself. No, I couldn’t seem to muster up the courage for the very tall ladder teetering on the edge of the skinny wooden stair. No thank you. That’s when you call in the professionals. Call me a wimp, I’m afraid I’ve heard worse. Grin.

I’m trying to be patient and take my time. I’m thinking of etched old mirrors and floaty soft drapes, maybe colored vintage glass on the window sill. I think I’ll start with a simple vintage mirror though, in case I change my mind on the drapes.

This old place is decked out in a rainbow of switch plate cover colors, I’d like to narrow it down to just one. In the kitchen they’re sort of a dark pewter shade. That might be the way to go everywhere.Cottage Fix blog - living room and stairwell painted whiteI’m so happy to be looking out into the back garden and see these sweet white blooms looking back at me. The white camellias are putting on a gorgeous show this year and the royal star magnolia just recently joined the stage.

The piano is the first thing you see when you walk through our front door. This back wall is the one that always gives me trouble. I can’t seem to get it right. I’m working on a picture collection now. But like all of my projects, it’s slow going. That’s mostly because I’m not so sure it’s working out. Ugg!Cottage Fix blog - white stairwellCottage Fix blog - white bloom and a buzzing beeI’m also shuffling the throw pillows around, and around and around and around. Grin. I change up one little thing and it’s like a whirlwind of shuffling and buffling.  And then I can’t even remember what I was doing in the first place! I did manage to get the sun porch looking fresh with denim, stripes, whites, and a picnic basket. If I could get our entire little cottage looking more like this, I’d be a happy happy lady!Cottage Fix blog - denim, stripes, whites, and a picnic basket on the sun porchCottage Fix blog - white camellia in the sunSee you soon!

Ahhhhh, so much beautiful eye candy this morning Sally!!! Your staircase looks absolutely gorgeous! I honestly didn’t even notice the gold switchplate until you mentioned it then I had to go back and look and actually think it looks quite nice:)

Isn’t playing in your nest the best fun! Even tho our space is small, I still love moving things around:) The British call it “faffing”…so faffing about is always fun! Love your big denim pillows too!

So pretty! I believe that is the first time I have seen that corner with the piano and your staircase. Love it!

Thanks so much Sally!! I haven’t shown our staircase that much because there was a hole in the wall from our bathroom remodel. The plumber had to open it up to reach a pipe. We finally managed to get it patched and then hired our painter friend to douse it white. Have a great week!! xoxo Sally

Your stairwell looks so bright with the sun shining through…of course you needed to hire that paint job out to the pros. Gorgeous archway between the living room and beautiful staircase. Such accents only to be found in older homes. Of course, the photos of your sunroom always delight the senses.

Oh, how I covet the character of an older house, Sally. Your gorgeous stairway reminds me a lot of the home my hubby grew up in. I love your collection of frames on the wall behind the piano…I am a sucker for old, empty frames 😉

i love getting to see this part of your house! I don’t think you’ve ever shared your foyer and staircase area before. It’s so pretty. I don’t blame you for hiring out someone to paint over your stair case. It’s tricky painting above stairs! I love the white! It’s so fresh and will allow you a lot of versatility with decorating.

White walls and sunshine- what a lovely sight! Your stairwell is so pretty, and the beginnings of your gallery wall behind the piano look promising. Your flowers are gorgeous!
