holiday wreath of fresh evergreen, rosemary, and lavender

fresh wreath of evergreen, rosemary, and lavender

The holiday madness has begun!  The shopping, baking, decorating, and of course the crafting are all in full swing.  Did I mention the shopping?  I have certainly been doing my part in stimulating our economy!  As much as I love to shop for gifts I happen to love making things even more.  The kids and I have been holiday crafty crazy since they were just tiny little guys.  We made candy covered Christmas trees and glittered coated stars, paper chains […]

change your mind much?

Taupe cottage living room

What’s that they say about a woman being able to change her mind on a whim as often and whenever she wants?  It’s her prerogative — I think.  How many times does she get to switch things up before the innocent indecisive behavior starts to look a little coo coo?  Well for my sake I hope it’s at least three or four!  Shall I go through the colors of the dining and living room hopefully for the last time, picking […]

fall centerpiece

camellia and fall fruit

Happy Fall!!  So this is one of my new favorite decorating tips.  While you’re at the market, fill your basket with some of your families favorite produce, add some flowers or herbs or whatever you have from the garden, and call it a centerpiece.  I love how simple and pretty it looks.  My kiddo’s fall fruits of choice are pomegranate, pears, and apples, but the possibilities are endless!  A few posts back I did a similar centerpiece with clementines, I […]

sage green armoire and pillows

Don’t laugh!  The armoire that I painted gray a couple weeks ago is now showing off a soft shade of sage green.  What can I say?  It happens!  It takes me forever to make up my mind and I often drag decisions out for as long as I absolutely can.  After months with no sofa, I picked out our family room sofa under a threat from my hubby “either pick out a sofa in 15 minutes or I’ll pick one […]

clementine centerpiece

clementine with shutters

We’ve been pinching our pennies lately trying to save for Christmas, the upstairs bath remodel, and all of those things that just sort of pop up when you least expect it.  I don’t like it at all, but I’m sure I’ll be happy when we are picking out tiles and faucets!  My mom dropped off these beautiful clementines and I decided to use them for our dining table centerpiece along with a couple sprigs of camellia.  I don’t usually go […]

cottage color

blue and cream cottage buffet

Happy Friday!  Alot has been going down at cottage fix the past couple of weeks, some good, some bad. We sprung a leak in our unfinished basement and water sprayed and spewed everywhere, and of course it was bright and early Monday morning, bad. The basement got pretty wet before I happened to hear the water gushing out, ugg! On the bright side, it was fixed in a jiffy. I finished all of my fall planting and flower potting — […]

cottage living room painted ivory

cottage living room painted ivory

That’s right… the living room is finally completely painted!  Whoo Hooo!!  This one was a doozy.  As much as I love our tall ceilings, about halfway through this paint job I found myself telling those ceilings where they could go!  You get the gist.  Yes, this is one of those rare occasions I am actually glad I don’t have a large great room with cathedral ceilings.  Can anyone say “painter?”  So now I can’t turn my head all the way […]

Virginia in the Fall

wooden bench with fall sweater and hat

Summer in Virginia is hot, sticky, and humid and just when you think you can’t take it anymore, in rolls a crisp, fresh breeze.  Up go the windows to let the cool air waft in.  Fall is my favorite season.  I love the cool sunny days, the warm hearty suppers, and the changing of the leaves.  I love the fact that I can pile on as many layers as I want and nobody knows that I ate one to many […]
