Salutations! I’m just back from a lovely little getaway to Buxton NC which is a small town on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I have been spending vacations in the Outer Banks since I was a little girl with my hair in pigtails and floaties on my arms. I can remember bobbing up and down in the waves with the sun beating down on my face, so much fun!
My honey and I started taking our kiddos to Hatteras for a beach vacation that’s care free and easy going. There’s not much action in the town of Buxton, so we soaked up a long weekend of the laid back life. When I say not much, I mean really not much. There’s Conner’s Market, a handful of restaurants, and a few gift shops. But the shop that keeps us coming back is the bakery, The Orange Blossom Bakery and Cafe. Their over-the-top signature apple uglies, decadent donuts, and mouth watering muffins could be the reason we drive the extra hour south. Is that bad?
The beach has changed over the years. Time and change go hand and hand, and time has transformed the landscape of our favorite beach destination. The ocean swallowed up the pool in the last hurricane and left a sand dune in its place. Some of the cottages, like the one pictured here, are practically in the ocean now. This cottage has sand bags all around its front side to protect it from the crashing waves.
On our last day in Hatteras the skies turned gray with overcast and the ocean a muted blue -gray. We watched the fish swim and hop up clear out of the waves. We even saw a few stingrays leap from the water and fly along sort of flapping about. We spotted this paddle boarder and watched him catch a few waves. It was a relaxing and refreshing weekend away to get me geared up for some cottage decorating type things. Lots of ideas have been twirling around in my head, oh yes, the summer projects are lining up. I hope I have time to get it all done!
As much as my honey and I like to go on vacation, I think we like coming home even more. Glad to be home!
xoxo Sally
Such lovely pictures. Makes me feel like I’m there with you. I can almost hear the waves. There is nothing like the ocean for relaxing. Thanks for sharing your lovely moments with us.
